A Family Shop, Not a Franchise

Bedford Auto Care is at 803 Broadway Ave, Bedford, OH 44146. The family has been fixing cars since 1966, when JR McGroarty opened Upson Shell in Euclid. His son Frank took it on in 1998, and Frank Jr. runs the Bedford shop now.

There is no head office to escalate to and no script for the person at the counter to read from. If a repair is not worth doing on your vehicle, someone here will tell you that, which occasionally costs us the job and has kept the place going for three generations.

The work is ordinary garage work: brakes, oil, tires, diagnostics, engines, exhaust, suspension. The two specialties are Ohio E-Check repair and Fluid Film undercoating, and both of those exist because of the county we are in and the winters we get.

Shell was good to the McGroartys. It is where the family learned to run an auto repair business, and three of Frank's brothers went on to open and run their own Shell stations across northern Ohio.

The Two Franks

Between them: decades of ASE certified work, factory level training with Ford and General Motors, and fifteen years spent teaching other technicians how to do this properly.

Frank Jr. is a dedicated automotive professional and owner-operator of Bedford Auto Care. His journey in the automotive industry began early, with him earning his first ASE certification at the age of 18. He went on to graduate from The University of Akron in 2007.

Frank currently maintains his ASE Master Auto Tech certification and holds an EPA licensure for Ohio E-Check repair. This dedication underscores his commitment to high-quality service and technical expertise at his family's shop.

Founder · Semi retired, still in the building

Frank is a seasoned professional with more than 35 years in the field. His career includes extensive experience in automotive academia and shop management, complemented by 29 years as an ASE certified expert with an advanced engine performance specialization.

Having completed factory-level training with Ford and General Motors, he also served the community as an Ohio EPA certified instructor, where he guided technicians in resolving emissions issues during the roll out of the Ohio E-Check program. His professional background further includes 15 years as a mechanical instructor at Ohio Technical College and Conrad's career training program.

Frank assumed leadership of Upson Shell in Euclid, Ohio in 1998, eventually transitioning the operation to its current Bedford Auto Care location in 2003.

Where a Lot of Our Technicians Come From

Bedford Auto Care works with the automotive trade program at Bedford High School. Frank Sr. ran that program as its head teacher and instructor for the better part of a decade before retiring in 2026.

A good number of the apprentices who have come through this shop started in that classroom, and several have gone on to real careers in the trade. Joe came to us as an apprentice and is now our senior technician.

Sell You Something You Don't Need

Rotors get measured before they get replaced. A fluid service gets recommended when the schedule or the fluid says so, not because it is a profitable add-on. A trouble code gets diagnosed before anyone buys a part.

And where a job is outside what we take on, high voltage battery work, or a procedure that genuinely needs manufacturer software, we will tell you that up front rather than finding out halfway through.

There is no booking form here, because there is no booking system behind it. You get whoever picks up the phone at the shop, which is faster anyway, and they can tell you what the week looks like.
