Tune-Ups in Bedford, Ohio
"Tune-up" is a term that outlived the thing it described. There are no points to set and no carburettor to adjust, the computer handles the timing and the fuelling.
What a Tune Up Means on a Modern Engine
The tune up as it used to exist, points and timing and carburettor adjustment, does not apply to a modern engine. What the term covers now is ignition components, filters, and the parts that quietly degrade performance and fuel economy.
What people mean by it is usually: the engine is not running the way it used to. That is a real complaint and it has real causes.

What people bring in
- Rough idle or a shake at a stop
- Hesitation or a flat spot when accelerating
- Fuel economy that has dropped noticeably
- Hard starting
- A check engine light with a misfire code
- The engine just not feeling like it used to
What it usually turns out to be
Spark plugs at the end of their interval, an ignition coil breaking down under load, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a clogged air filter, a vacuum leak, failing oxygen sensors, or carbon buildup on direct-injection engines.
Those are specific faults with specific fixes. Which is why we diagnose rather than selling a fixed tune-up package, half of what is in a package is often not what is wrong with your engine.
Plugs are an interval item
Modern plugs last a long time, and the interval is in the handbook. Leaving them well past it does not save money, worn plugs make the coils work harder, and coils cost considerably more than plugs.
The economy connection
A drop in fuel economy is a symptom worth taking seriously. It usually means the engine is running rich, and running rich is also what sets emissions codes and fails E-Checks. If economy has dropped and the light is on, they are probably the same fault.

Tune-Ups. Common Questions
No, deliberately. We diagnose what your engine actually needs. A package sells you items that may be fine and can still miss the fault.
It is in your handbook and it varies a lot by engine and plug type. Tell us the vehicle and we will tell you the interval.
Typically spark plugs, ignition coils where needed, filters, and an inspection of the components that affect running. What your vehicle needs depends on its interval and condition.
By the manufacturer's interval, which varies enormously by plug type. Some are due at 30,000 miles and some go past 100,000.
It might, if the cause is an ignition or filter item. If the cause is something else, a tune up is money spent without fixing the complaint, which is why we diagnose first.
It can restore economy lost to worn components. It will not take a vehicle beyond what it was designed to do.
Ignition faults and misfires are a common cause of emissions failures, so sometimes yes. But if a code is stored, that needs diagnosing rather than assuming.
