Pads, Rotors, Calipers and Lines Done Properly

Brakes give plenty of warning before they become dangerous, and almost all of that warning is cheap to act on. The gap between a routine pad job and a job that takes the rotor and caliper with it is usually a couple of months of ignoring a noise.

A pad that is worn but still has material left is a straightforward job. The same pad left another two months takes the rotor with it, and sometimes the caliper after that.

Bring it in when you notice

  1. 01Squealing that comes and goes, usually the wear indicator doing its job
  2. 02Grinding, which usually means the pad material is gone
  3. 03A pedal that goes further down than it used to, or feels soft
  4. 04Pulsing through the pedal or the steering wheel when you brake
  5. 05The car pulling to one side as it slows
  6. 06A brake warning light, or a parking brake that will not hold on a slope
  7. 07Visible fluid on the inside of a wheel

What we actually check

The whole system, not just the part that is making the noise. Pad thickness on both sides, rotor thickness and runout, caliper slide pins and piston movement, flexible hose condition, hard line corrosion and fluid condition.

Corroded brake lines deserve a mention around here specifically. Northeast Ohio salt goes after hard lines, and a line that looks scaly is a line worth talking about before it lets go rather than after.

How we handle the repair

We look at it, we tell you what we found, and you decide. If the rotors have enough material and are within spec, we say so. If they do not, we say that too and explain why.

What we will not do is quote you four corners when the rear brakes have half their life left.

Related systems worth checking at the same time

A pulsing pedal is usually rotors, but a shimmy that only shows up at speed can be a wheel balance issue instead. A pull under braking can be a caliper, but it can also be an alignment or a suspension problem. Since the wheels are already off, it is a sensible moment to look.

Brake Repair. Common Questions

It depends far more on how and where you drive than on mileage. Stop-and-go city driving wears pads much faster than highway miles. There is no useful number, the honest answer is that we measure them.

No. If the rotors are within spec and in good condition, they stay. We measure them rather than replacing them on principle.

Do not wait on that one. A soft or sinking pedal points at fluid, a leak or a master cylinder, and any of those are worth looking at now. Call the shop.

Grinding usually means the friction material is gone and metal is contacting the rotor. At that point the rotor is being cut every time you stop, so it is no longer a pads-only repair.

That is normally rotor thickness variation, often called warping. It can sometimes be machined out, but on thinner modern rotors replacement is frequently the better call.

Yes, always as an axle pair. Different friction levels left to right make the vehicle pull under braking.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes components from the inside. Most manufacturers specify a replacement interval, and it is worth following.

A soft or sinking pedal points at air in the system, a fluid leak or a failing master cylinder. That one is not worth driving on.

Stop and go driving wears pads considerably faster than highway miles. Two vehicles with identical mileage can be nowhere near each other on pad life.

Whichever the measurement supports. Rotors have a minimum thickness specification, and if machining would take them under it, they get replaced.
